A soldier desperate to prove himself.
A kingdom on the brink of war.
With a sharp tongue and an unruly temper, Sage Fowler is not what they’d call a proper lady―which is perfectly fine with her. Deemed unfit for a suitable marriage, Sage is apprenticed to a matchmaker and tasked with wrangling other young ladies to be married off for political alliances. She spies on the girls―and on the soldiers escorting them.
As the girls' military escort senses a political uprising, Sage is recruited by a handsome soldier to infiltrate the enemy ranks. The more she discovers as a spy, the less certain she becomes about whom to trust―and Sage becomes caught in a dangerous balancing act that will determine the fate of her kingdom.
With secret identities and a tempestuous romance, Erin Beaty's The Traitor’s Kiss is full of intrigue, espionage, and lies.
My review:
I adored this book! I was just coming off the high of re-reading Throne of Glass series for the billionth time and needed something similar. 'Lo and behold, The Traitor's Kiss did just that. The story starts off with Sage Fowler not wanting to marry like every other girl in her village and her Aunt and Uncle set her up with the village's Matchmaker. The Matchmaker realizes there is something different about Sage and Sage takes up an apprenticeship with the Matchmaker. During all of this we meet Alex Quinn who is in the military and is responsible for the life of the prince. Alex gets sent with his merry men to escort all the ladies being matched by Sage and her boss across the country.
I thought I knew what the twist would be when it was coming up and I could feel the tension rising between all the characters but of course I get smacked in the face with a different twist and it's pretty shocking. I love the writing from Erin Beaty and am looking forward to the sequel The Traitor's Ruin which is available now for purchase.
Sage Fowler fleshed out nicely throughout the book and the world building was slightly confusing at first but once I got a handle on the time period it was smooth sailing. I'm a sucker for romance and there is plenty of that :)
